Martinitsi in Blossom

Happy March 1st.

In Bulgaria, March 1st signals the end of winter.

Baba Marta (Granny Martha or March) brings better weather.

If she’s happy it’s bright and sunny.

If she’s not, then it’s showers, rain and storms.

Bulgarians give and receive martinitsi on March 1st.

A martinitsa is a token made of red and white wool – sometimes simple and sometimes elaborate.

People wear them until the Spring shoots and blossoms appear and then they hang them on the trees and bushes.

By mid march the trees have as many Martinitsi hanging on them as they have new leaves and flowers.

Martinitsi in Bulgaria photo facts.

This is a straightforward photo.

My objective was to show how the Martinitsi combine with the blossoms to convey an image of rebirth and growth where man made objects combines with nature.

Luckily the Morello Cherries grow outside my door so I could wait to catch the moment.
