My comments on manual focus were, I think, related to macro photograhy. You really can't rely on autofocus to pick out a dragonfly's eye even if the focus spot is in exactly the the right place. Also focussing is a bit misleading the usual technique is to set the lens to the required magnification and then move yourself backwards and forwards.
